Given Iteris' experience in intelligent transportation system (ITS) design, engineering, and architecture and standards, we have sustained and active role in working with the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) team, supporting their direction in architecture definition and relation to standards, and engaging with all currently supported and any promising new standards.

High-level Mobility and Technology Assessment
For over 15 years, Iteris has developed, maintained and evolved the National ITS Architecture, and, more recently, the Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture (CVRIA) for the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).
Connected vehicles (CVs) are equipped with wireless communications to share information with other vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and the infrastructure they use for transport (signals and roadway surfaces). CV holds the potential to prevent more than 80% of all vehicle crashes. Iteris is a trusted advisor to DOTs and local agencies, helping them navigate the path, recommend the right smart mobility infrastructure management solutions and prepare them for a new world.
The evolution of ARC-IT
The transportation environment is much different today than it was in 1993. Mobile communications capabilities have exploded and continue to expand. The wireless data services have become so capable that they support advanced ITS operations such as the enablement of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), and their related applications.
In 2012, Iteris led the development of the CVRIA, which shared the CAV-related ITS components of the National ITS Architecture. The CVRIA was developed to support USDOT CAV research and the Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program that put connected vehicle technologies and services in three real-world settings. In 2017, the CVRIA was integrated with the National ITS Architecture to provide a unifying framework that covers all of ITS. The expanded reference framework became ARC-IT Version 8.0.
Preparing agencies for connected and automated vehicles
Iteris has developed, under the USDOT National ITS Architecture Program, training and support tools to make it possible for stakeholders to apply ARC-IT to their own environment for planning and project development.
We have assisted state, regional and local public agencies in the development of their regional ITS architectures based on ARC-IT, and have developed project architectures for agencies that reflect the portions of the regional ITS architecture that are implemented with the planned project’s development and deployment. This becomes even more important as agencies wade into CAV implementation.

Iteris has been the developer and maintainer of ARC-IT, RAD-IT, SET-IT, CVRIA and the National ITS Architecture from the inception of all of those products.
We are more experienced in, know more about development, maintenance and use of ITS architecture than anyone else because we are the only ones that have done it for the entire time the architecture has existed.
We have also been engaged in the standards community from a similar time, at times monitoring, participating and contributing to NTCIP, SAE, IEEE, ISO TC204, ISO/IEC JTC1 AG8 (architecture), ISO/IEC JTC1 WG11 and IEC SyC Smart Cities (smart cities), W3C and OneM2M.
